The Dinkheads had a challenge ahead of them on Wednesday night at Tubman Softcore semifinals - that was the Blundercats' determination not to come away without a spot in the finals. Dinkheads came out strong in the first game with a win sparked by the heads up play by Beau on defense. They lost a little bit of focus in the second by dropping the set, 25-18. After a regrouping and pep talk, the Dinks came out much better in the third set by a close margin and beat the 'Cats, 25-22. On to the Championship game where the Volley Lamas came in fresh from a week rest ready to challenge. The Dinks appeared to be a little fatigued in the first set for a loss, but found new energy amid some fantastic volleys and fierce service by Carrie and were victorious in the second and third sets to come from behind and take the USL wristbands, Ex Novo gift certificate and Wednesday Softcore crown. Great season to all the Wednesday Softcore teams and especially to the Dinkheads who proved their #1 seed!
Carrie Martin of the Dinkheads certainly earns POTW at Wednesday Tubman Softcore for her flawless play which spurred her team to a three-game sweep of the Blundercats. A powerful force at all positions, Carrie was especially effective at net where she tipped and killed her way with an offensive attack that's been stifled over the last month's long absence on the court due to the holidays and winter weather. With incredible finesse, Carrie makes plays which appear so effortless. Game 2 saw a push by the Blundercats to gain ground, but behind Carrie's precise setting and massive service, the Dinks were able to pull out a 25-22 win. There was no denying a third set and the Dinks won handily, 25-14. Kudos to Carrie for bringing her best game and winning attitude!
Ben Iwersen of the Dinkheads gets straight to the business of winning each week during Wednesday Softcore at Tubman. Especially when he's in the front row leading the defense at net. Blocks? Check. Tips? Check (his fingers just fly!). Jumps? Check. Energy? Duh...and that's just a small part of his defense. Using his fancy footwork, Ben went to the far reaches of the gym to make outrageous saves against the Straight Shots in three very close matches. He was also very effective with offensive ability in delivering pounding service and coming up top for a kill or two. After losing the first set, Ben exploded the Dinks' energy and they fought to wins in the second two games. Nice way to finish the night!
