In true Underdog form, the playoffs this spring at Unthank Park provided drama, great competition, and probably a bit too much fun. After seeing the top four seeds make their way to the semifinals, the competition got very interesting. In the first semifinals game, the 4th seeded We Got the Runs provided the league with the biggest upset of the season, knocking off the number 1 seeded and previously undefeated CubicalSex 9-4. Led by their captain and leader Alyssa Pallari and pitcher Tym Rickards, We Got the Runs shook off an 0-3 start to the season, winning 4 straight games en route to the finals. In the second semifinal, Unthank field saw its first 9 inning game as Kickmaballs, the number 2 seed knocked off the 3 seed Blue Steel 4-2 after scoring 2 runs in the top of the 9th. It was then Kickmaballs' 2nd baseman Nate Doney who sealed the victory with a huge double play in the bottom half of the inning.
So the stage was set, the two hottest teams in Unthank's spring kickball league took the field in a game that looked to be an instant classic. The field was wet, but the players were hungry and it showed through great defensive plays inning after inning by both squads, a key trait that got them to the championship in the first place. Whether it was Kickmaballs' Pitcher Corey Gray with his long frame, or 'Seacrest' with his speed at shortstop, or We Got the Runs' Alyssa Pallari at first base in conjunction with a stellar outfield, these two teams made some spectacular defensive plays as bodies were flying around all game. In the end, in a very tight game, it was a infield error by We Got the Runs that allowed Kickmaballs to score the winning run, leading to a 3-2 victory and their 3rd Kickball championship at Unthank Park!
With the team-appointed nickname (I dont want to be accused) "Handsome Lightning," Corey did it all on Sunday. At the plate, Corey connected on a league best two homeruns, while also holding We Got the Runs to only 3 runs. More importantly, "Handsome Lightning" led Kickmaballs to their second win of the season and a three way tie for 3rd place in the league.
