Something special was in the air for the championship game between The Last Calls and Sons of Pitches Saturday afternoon. Inebriated fan in the shadows along the first base dugout making random comments throughout game...check. Pug dog squealing like a pig behind the 3rd base dugout in disapproval of the ump's strike zone...check. Father and son shooting off model rockets in deep left field...check. Grandpa Earl celebrating his 71st birthday with his extended family in the park, covering the field with the sweet smell of b-b-que chicken and pork throughout the afternoon...check. A stellar championship game between two stellar teams...absolutely!
Sons of Pitches took a commanding 11-3 lead after two innings due in large part to some timely hitting and rock sold defense by the ginger twins. Perhaps a bit weary having to play their third game of the day, The Last Calls appeared to have run out of gas for the title game. The Last Calls ain't no ordinary team, scratching and crawling their way back to give give Sons of Pitches all they could handle, falling just short 17-15. Congrats Sons of Pitches...a well deserved Underdog Softball championship!
Opening day at Ferhill Park started off with a whale of a game between The Last Calls and Son of Pitches. It appeared Sons of Pitches were on their way to a relatively easy victory with a 10-1 lead going into the top of the 4th inning...not so fast said the Last Calls. Slowly but surely The Last Calls bats woke up and chipped away at the lead throughout the last three innings, finally tying the game in the top of the 7th at 11-11. It appeared we were headed into extra innings with two quick outs in the bottom of 7th...James Raspen of Son of Pitches thought otherwise. A solid hit landed James on 2nd, yet a uniform malfunction almost derailed his moment in the spotlight. It seemed one of his shoes was in dire need of repair and had seen its better days. James focused and decided to take one for the team...a strong yank and tear off on the sole of one of his shoes immediately fixed the equipment issue and allowed this speed demon to score the winning run of the game. This selfless act by James will not soon be forgotten and surely inspire his team for the rest of the season!
