Runners on second and third. A one-run lead. One out.
This is what Thrown Together found themselves starring down in the bottom of the last inning against a team of Never Nudes who just wouldn't quit. Thrown together had taken a four-run lead into the last at-bat, but some solid kicks and heads-up base-running shortened the scoreboard; 06-02 was suddenly 06-05. Then, in a series of flukey events, the a cleanly fielded ball wound up out of play, and a routine single became a dangerous double.
The spectators hushed. The game had been tight, the play had been crisp, and both teams, pink and blue alike, deserved to walk with wristbands. The benches were on their feet, fingers pressed into the chain link fence. They didn't talk, they just spun their rally caps.
After a deep breath and a regrouping on the infield, the ball was loosed across the plate. It was a clean pitch, and the kicker got a sick piece of it, slamming a line drive that the shortstop somehow managed to grab out of the air. The runners couldn't advance. Two outs.
A new kicker. A bunt to the pitcher- a clean, drooping bunt that held in the thick grass. Rather than risk the play at first and possibly the game, Thrown Together just held it on the mound. The bases were loaded. There were two outs.
One last pitch, with the season on the line. A clean pitch. A slammed ball. It looked long, and it looked good- maybe a bases-clearer. But no, somehow, magically, the center fielder found himself under it and made the catch.
That ended the game and the season with a well-played game between two excellent teams. Here are Thrown Together, the King School Park champions
Thrown together or not, they can play as a team, they kick hard, get on base and run the bases aggressively. Defense there aren't many holes if any and the hustle is there. Kari was playing well as usual, catching a rocket sent back to her, hustling around the bases and scoring some runs.
Adding smiles and good times, she was a big part of Thrown Together. Keep having fun and playing hard team.
Happy Birthday Erika, and welcome back to Underdog Kickball! It's been too long, but boy are we glad you're back. Now we can rest assured that Mikey is going to be on his best behavior.
We couldn't have asked for a better day to kick some balls at King School and Erika and her Thrown Together crew came to play. While it was a complete team effort, Erika was the shining star. Gobbling up everything that came her way, Erika looked and played like she hadn't just taken 9 months off. There is only one thing we will ask of you guys next time: Please save a cupcake for the ump!
