Pabst Smear
Trailing by 6 going into the final inning and showing little offensive life for the previous four frames, Pabst Smear pulled off an 8-run 7th to stun Sons of Pitches, 17-16. No play in that impressive rally was more crucial than that made by Nick!

With 2 outs and trailing by 2 runs, Syndee lashed a base hit into the outfield to easily score the first run. Nick raced home for the tying-run and looked to be gunned down at the plate following a strong relay throw from the outfield...until he leapfrogged the catcher, landed past the plate, and had to crawl to touch home before being tagged! Play of the day in a highly competitive and good-spirited game!

Pitch Please
Wendi helped Pitch Please complete an impressive come-from-behind victory over Jort Report to win the most competitive and hard-fought game of the week. Down by 7 heading into the 7th, Pitch Please had scored 5 when Wendi stepped to the plate with 2 outs and runners on second and third. She proceeded to knock a game-tying single to center field! Beyond that, she did an excellent job hanging tough behind the plate and got an assist from her dad, who supplied the paper towels to help clean home plate on a rainy and muddy day at the ballyard. Great effort, Wendi!

Pabst Smear
There's something about a softball team captain whose idea of keeping it light centers around heckling their own teammates... A consummate rabble-rouser in the dugout, at the plate, and on the mound, Sam helped keep the mood light for his teammates and opponents alike, continuously poking good-natured fun at other players while also exhibiting an endearing camaraderie. All jokes aside, Pabst Smear once again showed their resiliency, coming from behind in the 7th inning to overtake the Changes Ups. Great job, Sam!

Underhanded Compliments
John did his best Frank Robinson impression on Sunday. The longtime Underhanded Compliments player-manager has made his mark in the Irving Park league by organizing his team's batting order, vocally cheering on his teammates, and adjusting the defensive alignments as he's seen fit. But for the past couple of weekends, he'd done so by leading strictly from the bench.

Sunday was a new day: Big John came ready to play. Bat in hand, he knocked hits all around the diamond! Think Willis Reed in the 1970 NBA Finals or Wizards-era Michael Jordan. If you just play sports but don't love them, I'll borrow an Ed Helms classic from the 'Hangover': "He's still got it!"

The Change Ups
Kensey showed resiliency on Sunday. In the top of the first, she collided with the left-fielder when the two both went charging after a flyball to deep left-center. Unfazed, she brushed herself off and proceeded to tear the cover off the ball while playing great defense at second base. Kensey helped spark a 9-run 3rd inning off tough Jerry Jones' hurler, John. It would prove to be the difference in the ballgame, as the Change Ups overcame an early 9-2 deficit and held on to beat Jerry Jones Landscaping, 18-16. Great job Kensey!

Elizabeth Silberg
Elizabeth Silberg
Jerry Jones Landscaping
Elizabeth demonstrated the ultimate determination on Sunday. With her left leg in a boot and her wrist taped up, she toughed it out for the good of the team! Even though she was unable to run, Elizabeth put the bat on the ball in every at-bat and stood in at catcher for her squad, ultimately helping Jerry Jones Landscaping overcome Sons of Pitches in a 9-inning (!) one-run game. Way to go, Elizabeth!

Jerry Jones Landscaping Outlasts Pesky Jort Report for Spring Crown
There are too many certainties in life to condense into a witty lead-in sentence, but whatever your list includes, Jerry Jones Landscaping bringing their 'A game' to the ball-yard had better be on it! This well-rounded squad has it all: Consistent pitching, great defense, timely hitting, and production from up and down the lineup on both sides of the ball. I'm still unsure the extent of the professional services that Jerry Jones Landscaping provides, but they have yet to fail in their delivery of Irving Park softball domination.

I thought I had seen it all when Jort Report's Kellen went Henry Rowengartner to nail down a run at the plate from deep left field..then Jerry Jones' Stephen went full Jose Guillen, with his very own mutant throw from deep right center to one-up his counterpart. (If you don't know who Jose Guillen is, YouTube "Jose Guillen mutant throw from the outfield").

Point is, this is a talented bunch and a friendly one to boot! Be on notice Irving Park Underdog Softball league: Jerry Jones Landscaping is the team to beat in the summer season!
