Summer Co-ed Softball at Montavilla Park Tues/Thurs

Doug Lepre
Doug Lepre
The Avendors
The 7:45pm game between The Avendors and I'd Hit That showcased the pitching skills of Doug Lepre, a local softball veteran whose knowledge of the terrain at Montavilla Park served him well throughout the game. Neither the blazing sun or infield dust tornadoes could stop him from pitching a gem of game from start to finish, keeping the batters of I'd Hit That second guessing what pitch would be thrown next. Even though his team eventually lost 13-8 in a hard fought battle on opening day, Doug put the rest of the league on notice that he is a force to be reckoned with any time he steps onto the bump at Montavilla this summer season.

Basic pitches
This could have been a play of the year with Sam...
It was a basic line drive back to the pitcher with Sam at shortstop and the pitcher reached out to catch it and it tipped off his mit back to the right of Sam at short stop and he made a leaping to the right grab bare handed to get the out. It was truly something else, I had never seen such a play happen so fast and be so fun to watch. That was just the beginning of his incredible plays. Later coming to the plate and having some pretty clutch hits with the bat. Keep brings the amazing plays Sam and great job this week!

Michael Manahan
The Avendors
This weeks play of the week and competitor of the week would definitely go to Michael! During this game he was cranking huge hits and making big plays, one of which was an incredible jumping catch in the outfield to rob a batter of a possible home run if it had gone over his head. Michael is the all around player but also showed good sportsmanship all game, just being out on the field to have fun is what he was there for! Keep up the amazing plays Micheal.

Cleans plays
Second game of the night Bats Hit Crazy vs Old Dirty Balls, and it was a good one. Lots of plays, big hits and hustle from both sides. Ashley was doing her part, getting base knocks and scoring runs.
Adding some awesome catches in the outfield, her glove was just as good. Her teammates were backing her up, with everyone contributing to the win. Nice game.

I'd Hit That
This young man was a stand out this week at the plate. I had seen this young man in a season or two past but this guy must have eaten his wheaties and gotten some adjustments (from his chiro dr. or something) and all that becasue this guy was a beast at the plate tonight. I think he went 4 for 4 and it wasn't just that he did it but he did it with authorty. Trav, as he is called on the field was flat out the maan tonight. Good work Sir. Boss status!!!

Bats Hit Crazy!!
Brandon gets the play of the week and big play of the week from my standpoint. Starting on office he was able to create some huge hits and punch in a few runs almost every time at bat. On defense he did a great job of fielding hoppers in the infield and catch pop ups. If that isn't enough, Brandon was rounding second headed to third with the throw out coming in and the third baseman caught the ball and rather than sliding Brandon jumped over the tag to be safe at third! It had me in awe, truly a great play!

Delilah comes to underdog softball when I met her she was brand-new I think she said. She came open and available all the possibilities and played with the ultmost enthusiasm. All the while she didn't know how to play. She is my choice for player of the week because of her display of sportsmanship tonight. She is a competitor yes she doesn't have quiet all the skill of one who grew up playing sports cbut what she does have outshines even the most renowned of pros. Here's the situation she's playing catcher, there's a play at home, and she has to make a split second decision do I get the runner out or do I keep her safe? The ball comes in it's a bang bang play. The runner's at the plate you go for the ball first catch the ball tag the runner out, the runner could be injured you know all of the emotion in that moment. (The competition of it all) The tension mounts the ball's at the plate the runner is at the plate the she goes to the catch the ball. She's bent over to get the ball and the ball is coming at the same time the runner unaware that Delilah is at the plate. The runner keeps running, runs into Delilah at the same time the ball comes in Delilah turns around catches the runner at waist level and has the ability to pick her up and drop her. But Delilah holds onto the runner lets the ball go keep the runner safe in the run scores but what a great display of sportsmanship Delilah shows exemplary sportsmanship Delilah definitely my player of the week I always enjoy when you're out there look forward to seeing you next week.

Basic pitches
Nothing basic about this guy. Just recently from Thailand and crashes on his mountain bike almost dies (wink wink boys always cry wolf) and still comes out to play not basic at all. So he's a little wounded still but plays the entire game pitches and catches and ran (if you call it that) but he was brave and played through the pain. Good stuff Adam pants.

Erika Madrigal
Erika Madrigal
Real Thoughtful and team player
Starting off the night right, by trying to turn over a glove, Erika was already being a team player. She was doing more than that though as her team was making plays and swinging big. Everyone contributed on the field and Erika went even further.
Adding more to her findings, she took'em all with her in hopes to return to their players. Nice playing, great attitude and thanks for being on it.

Paige was terrific on the field tonight and right there off the field. Something super small does not go unnoticed. She wasn't the only one to help out the umpire but she was the first, Bill came with batshitcrazy bats thanks for keeping me safe from the boogie man... Totally appreciate you all.

I'd Hit That
My vote for player of the week is for a lady who seems to go unnoticed but she does the small things that matter in a big way. Tonight Jen as her team calls her, was one of a very few not snippy or cranky joes wanting to be cranky with the other team and or the umpire. Everybody knows that job is no ones favorite but they try their best. She was just a little cuttie hanging out waiting for a ball to hit humming of all things at the plate. She called it Zenning out. She did have a really good hit but the short stop had a better catch...she was robbed. Thanks Jen for keeping it light tonight. I am glad you were here tonight.

The Avendors
Doug is that guy that everyone likes to be around! Very enthusiastic about playing the games and ready to play each and every week. He may think every pitch is a great one no matter what the Umpire calls it but he just likes to give everyone a hard time. Doug can also hit real well except the fact that his teammates rag on him for not taking his own advice and wait for a good pitch, he just swings and hits the first pitch every time! Great guy and great for Underdog!

Bats Hit Crazy!!
Devin is a very serious man out on the softball field when it comes to game time but it is a great thing to watch. People are always riled up when he comes to the plate because they know that he can hit good and he will be a threat to drive a run in. Now that is exactly what he did! In the bottom of the 7th the game was tied and Devin knocked a huge hit to drive in the winning run and have his team advance into the next round of the playoffs! Always a great time having him out there and watching him play, keep it up in the next round Devin!

I can always count on Paul to make it a good time at the ball park. Every game he comes out for he plays his best even if he has to hobble to first he still gets on base for his team and smacks some huge hits around! Not only does he hit well but does a great job on defense at first and catcher, always turing around and cracking jokes and giving me a hard time. Good luck the rest of the way in the playoffs Montavillians and Paul keep bringing that attitude and hard play!

This is a true underdog story, though it may not have the end result that many expect, it was still awesome. Dan was pitching for the very first time in the Championship game and lead them to a very strong finish to be only knocked off the thrown by one run. He was a natural, almost every pitch spot on and when he was batting they were always huge hits and almost always driving in runs. Great job Montavillians and see you next season!
