POTW: Huevos Grandes and The Eradicators
Huevos Grandes
Welcome to the Monday/Wednesday Underdog Kickball League at Unthank Park. The first day started with a bit of a hiccup, but two veteran teams made the day a success. It is rare that every single person, on all of the teams, can show up at a park and start their game late with all smiles. I really appreciate your patience, and I am sure the little leaguers do as well. I can already tell this is going to be a great season!!
Typically I would highlight one persons great performance, but this week I am giving out the Player of the Week Award to a great achievement accomplished by teams Huevos Grandes and The Eradicators. Many teams would have piss and moaned about the delay, but you came out with zeal and a willingness to understand what it was once like to be a kid playing team sports. I thank you, the parents thank you, and most of all, the kids thank you.
I look forward to a successful season, and see you out on the diamond.

POTW: Adam Bryant
Red Rubber Lubbers
The second game of the day was an all out battle. Two teams with several veteran players matched each other run for run. On one side was the Red Rubber Lubbers; on the other side were The Bloopers.
Typically, you expect teams to start the season with great offensive prowess, and then defense strengthens throughout the season, but these two teams were already in mid-season form. Through the 3rd inning, the score was ties 1-1. Through the 6th, the score was tied 3-3. The 7th inning started to bring on the twilight of late evening, and the nerves of a tight game were apparent. The teams huddled, followed by some jockeying of their field players.
The Red Rubber Lubbers squeezed in a tight run to make the score 4-3 going in the bottom of the inning. The Bloopers put a couple of people on base with two outs. The pitch came across the plate, and the kicker connected with a laser back towards the pitcher. Adam Bryant jumped to his right hand side, almost going parallel to the ground, to snag the ball for the last out and saving any runs from scoring.
For his cat-like reflexes and jumping ability, Adam Bryant has earned the respect of his team, as well as, The Player of the Week Award.

POTW: Matt Drake
Kickin' Balls and Taking Names
Monday brought cooler temperatures and even cooler outfits. Kickin Balls and Taking Names fielded 8 players dressed in Superhero costumes. They had a sleek Bat Woman at 1st base, and another that used a bath towel as her maroon colored cape. The hardest person to miss on the field was Matt Drake. He donned the flag of Great Britain, and it seemed to work to his advantage. For some reason, everyone preferred to kick the ball straight at him (Brits may not have dentists but they can catch). For his fielding strength and a stand-up triple, Matt Drake has earned Player of the Week.

POTW: Kara DeBo
Balls of Fury!
What's the best birthday present you can give an Underdog Kickballer? A win over the reigning Montavilla champions, The Bloopers! Kara played great on her special day and the entire team followed suit to get them a slim lead in a great defensive match-up. Happy Birthday, you're a winner!

POTW: M C Bohnett
The Retainers
The last game of the day was a barn-burner. Team Huevos Grandes and The Retainers had an all out battle. The Retainers started the top of the 7th inning down by 4 runs, but they came through and rallied with 5 runs to take a 10-9 lead. Unfortunately, the lead was short lived because Huevos Grandes scored two quick ones to win the game 11-10.
Although The Retainers lost, they scored their first runs of the season. Additionally, their defense made a drastic improvement over the previous weeks. One reason for this turn around was the stellar left field play of MC Bohnett (AKA Purple Tights). She has an amazing range as she chases down fly balls and hands of fly paper. For her huge saves, MC Purple Tights has earned The Player of the Week.

POTW: Kate Reeg
Balls of Fury!
Kate earns this week's honor of POTW. Her tenacious defense and outstanding clutch RBI's was key to her sides success. The high temperatures had no affect on her ability to perform at the highest level. No matter what the situation was, kate delivered a stunning performance.

POTW: Annie Jesperson
The Retainers
Kickball sportwear is so last month. With a great showing of Retainer spirit all in their large and comical hats, Annie pulled out a great big sun hat to go with her "fresh out of the garden" look in a long skirt and sunglasses. A couple flying catches and boots into the field looked even more amazing with the flowing clothes and flopping hat she wore. Annie, you are my hero, and our player of the week!

POTW: Mike Miller and Andy Goshorn
Hatcha Mama
Michael Miller and Andy Goshorn of team Hatcha Mama, waited for the hottest day of the year to unveil their matching Batman costumes. All black uniforms, with full muscle padding, and ear tipped hoods. It couldn't have been more than 114 degrees.
If heatstroke would have occurred, you would have received the Darwin Award, but for your brave curiosity to temp fate, you have both received the Player of the Week Award. Congratulations!!

POTW: Hasslehoff
Huevos Grandes
In a ceremony brought every week by Huevos Grandes, Hasslehoff wins player of the week in all our hearts. Plus, he gets a trophy topped with Jack in the Box antenna heads? Awesome. Anyhow Hasslehoff, them were some good plays and kicks out there. Looking forward to the next season!

POTW: Team KBATN
Kickin' Balls and Taking Names
Kicking Balls and Taking Names may have lost their last game of the regular season, but they did so in style. Donning their freshest pirate gear, they put up a great fight through to the end of the game. Eye patches, tattered pant legs, hats, mustaches, and tattoos! Great show, KBATM! Can't wait to see what you come up with next!

POTW: Carynne Drake
Kickin' Balls and Taking Names
There are just some days when putting out your hands and closing your eyes works out. We see it all the time in the movies, but this really happened to Carynne Drake of team Kickn' Balls and Taking Names.
A high floater traveled to the short stop position and Carynne was waiting. It seemed as if she had visualized this moment a thousand times in her head. Her hands went out, her head turned to the side, and she waited. The ball fell perfectly into her extended arms and her hands tightened for an out. Carynne opened her eyes to a cheering team and a huge smile on her face. For her determination in the face of danger, the Lady Drake has earned the Player of the Week Award.

POTW: Kim Bastable
The Retainers
A shining star, on a team of not-for-profit misfits, Kim Bastable holds down center field for The Retainers. On Wednesday, Kim proved again why she is quickly becoming a household name. She wears black sweatshirts for a sleek look, and it helps her hide in the shadows of the twilight. Her stealth ability allowed her to track down the long balls and relay them to 2nd. Her trademark move is getting in front of the ball and trapping it before the ball has a chance to squeak into the outfield. For her constant fanaticism in managing balls, Kim Bastable has earned the Player of the Week.
He may have started out the game with a limp legged MANBUNT, but then he completely redeemed himself. Kirby Broderick of The Bloopers heard heckles from the stands and turned it into his personal mission to make a comeback. He started the confidence building by catching some long fly balls, followed by some accurate throws to the infield. Eventually it all came together when Kirby kicked a perfectly placed ball through three defenders. The ball squirted into the empty outfield and drove in three runs, effectively sealing the game and advancing The Bloopers to the semi-finals. For maintaining his focus, Kirby has earned the Player of the Week.
The Semi-Finals have arrived. Wednesday night showcased four exceptional teams and two great games. Balls of Fury pulled out a heartbreaker against Red Rubber Lubbers with a come from behind win. Final score was 3-2.
Game one brought us The Eradicators versus The Bloopers. It was a strong defensive battle from both sides. The score going into the 6th was 3-2. That's when Tanja Dill (The Eradicators) kicked a single and drove in 3 runs. This put the game out of reach for The Bloopers. For her great directional kicking and ability to propel her team into the finals, Tanja Dill has earned the Player of the Week Award.
A true team player happened to be sitting on the pine Wednesday evening. He started out the season with a pulled leg muscle but still gutted out playing in all of the games. Unfortunately, the nagging injury finally caught up to him in the last game of the season. A key player on the Red Rubber Lubbers, Terry Brasch showed remarkable courage in the face of pain, both physical and emotional. The leg may have sidelined him but he was also forced to watch his team take the field without him. Although he was relegated to the cheering section, Terry has earned the Player of the Week for his steadfast team support. Congratulations!!
