Caitlin Doughty Powers the Lamas to a Sweep
The Volley Lamas returned to the Wednesday Softcore league at Tubman ready to pick up where they left off last season (well, last week...), with Caitlin leading the charge like nobody's business. Her service is strong, relentless and never seems to miss the intended target. She has a clever service set up with her hitting hand and arm way behind her head. But it is ridiculously effective with the force that she gets from that motion. And ups? Caitlin is the BOSS in getting to those hard to reach and seemingly impossible saves. Behind her strong games, the Lamas were able to sweep We'd Hit That in three sets for a 3-0 match. Go Caitlin!

Karina Schmahl
Karina Schmahl
Karina Schmahl Makes Big Plays for the Straight Shots
Playing shorthanded due to absent teammates and her husband Jeff sidelined from shoulder surgery, Karina Schmahl took the lead with the Straight Shots and propelled them to a 2-1 game victory over Air Bud Strikes Back. With only four players on the floor, Karina made sure the team was in sync to cover their spots and helped the effort with some nifty ups and saves. Her service was on point and she racked up needed offense when it counted. The Straight Shots had a great battle going with Air Bud in the second game and came up short dropping the set 26-24, but gained ground in the third and secured the win. A few long volleys were fun to witness and she kept up the intensity, especially with great work at the net. Way to keep your team rallying, Karina!

Ryan Doughty
Ryan Doughty
The Volley Lama
Ryan Doughty of Volley Lamas did double duty on Wednesday Softcore at Tubman. Not only did he play a vicious game with his own squad at the 615pm game, he was a glutton for punishment and returned to sub for Air Bud Strikes Back at the 815pm game. Ryan lost absolutely no momentum between his first and sixth game of the night . With unbelievable fortitude and skill, he was able to play crazy defense with the Lamas and threw in a few forceful kills at net as well. That added up to a 3-0 victory over Sloppy Sets. Take an hour break, and Ryan's back in the gym ready to crash the Air Bud team party by stepping aboard and continuing his fantastic night of not only mad skills but great sportsmanship. Bet you slept well afterward!

Carli is the BOMB!
Carli is the BOMB!
Sloppy Sets
Carli Bergy of Sloppy Sets can do it ALL! She was rarin' to go on Wednesday at Tubman in a Softcore match vs. Sportland. From all areas of the court, Carli was on fire whether pretty tips over net, perfectly placed ups and sets and a decisive series of serves to put Game 2 to bed with a victory. Sportland gave the Sloppys all they could handle with a needed extra point battle in Game 1. Carli's stupendous serving did the trick in that game as well as she never faulted and threw in a few aces that Sportland's defense just couldn't answer. While Sportland managed to come out ahead in Game 3 by a 25-21 margin, there wasn't any taking away from Carli's performance with great support from the Sloppys!

Jay Shah Would Hit That
Jay Shah Would Hit That
In fact, Jay would hit anything on the court, off the court, back row, front row, mid, you name it. 'Cause he is relentless in the pursuit of VOLLEY. He worked like a mad man during Wednesday Softcore match vs. Sloppy Sets at Tubman. Playing a bit shorthanded in the first game (but huge shout out to Erika from the Sloppys for volunteering to help the shortfall!), We'd Hit That was electrified by Jay's outstanding efforts and incredible saving techniques. You gotta wonder if his body is sore the day after because the moves he made to reach any dig he could would make a contortionist proud. And best of all, Jay's a great team leader by his continuous encouragement and coaching and after a tough first set, We'd Hit That were oh so close with a 26-24 loss in the second. So keep on keepin' on, Jay - you've made a fan out of us!

Happy Birrrrtthhdaay to You!
Happy Birrrrtthhdaay to You!
Sloppy Sets
USL volleyball supporter extraordinaire Lynnea Searls is all volleyball all the time, and plays on several teams at once covering most nights of the week. That's how much she loves the game. And so it was fitting that she chose to spend her ?? birthday (she's not telling age, so we'll say she's 21 and old enough to play for USL) at the Softcore Wednesday night playoffs at Tubman. Squaring off against We'd Hit That, Lynnea and company were a dominating force with some rigorous plays that really showed their unique teamwork. Captain Lynnea led the way with those crazy just-over-the-net soft serves which the defense always has trouble handling. Plus, her positive attitude is never lacking and she always has something funny to share with her teammates. Her cheerleader moves always crack us up but never get in the way of her performance and determination to not only win, but have a great time doing it. The Sloppys were victorious in three sets, so we'll see them next week in the semifinals. But not before we wish Lynnea a Happy Birthday and a great year of USL volleyball ahead!

Tasha Takes Tubman
Tasha Takes Tubman
The Volley Lama
Rarin' to go for the semifinals at Tubman Softcore on Wednesday night, Tasha Huntley was a woman possessed by the will to win. Every dig, assist, and serve, she took her best shot and was extremely successful on all fronts. Her relentless defense in the semifinals vs. Sloppy Sets was extraordinary and the key to the Lamas comeback after dropping the first set. Powered by Tasha's service points, and going all out on every play, the Lamas propelled themselves into the finals vs. Sportland. Tasha was absolutely a site to behold in the back row alongside Ryan Doughty as they bumped every shot that came to them which kept long volleys in play and were great fun to watch. While the Lamas were ultimately defeated in two close sets in the finals, Tasha ruled as volley queen of the night for outstanding sportsmanship and athletic ability in five great sets of play over two matches. Tasha, take Tubman - it's yours!
